Up for your consideration is a lovely vintage Japanese wooden marquetry box from decades ago. In very nice condition. Comes with single sheet info. Never used.
This particular box is known as Hakone marquetry and was first created in the late Edo period at a resting station in Hakone known as Hatajuku.
To create this gem, various kinds of wood of different colors are gathered from all over Japan and then dried naturally. The wood is then cut into long sticks to be combined, whereby the ends make mosaic patterns. This painstaking method then has the mosaic surface planed away to create thin paper-like shavings. These shavings are pasted on craft works with varnish to complete the look. Imagine all the work and talent it takes to create this masterpiece! The symmetry as well as artistry is amazing!
Dimensions: 7 3/4" long when secret box is extended fully. 4 1/2" wide, almost 3 1/2" tall and almost 3/4" deep
Weight: 2.00 oz.
Comes from smoke-free, pet-free environment.
