Traveling around southeast Turkey: Gaziantep - Today's Zaman

As someone who writes guide books about Turkey for a living, I'm occasionally asked for advice about travel ing in various parts of the country. For those who have sought me out for tips on planning a trip around the country's fascinating Southeast -- and a few people have in the past -- I always gave two pieces of advice. Firstly, avoid the searing heat of mid-summer, when temperatures in the lowlands of the Euphrates and Tigris river basins soar to well over 40 degrees Celsius. Secondly, avoid the fasting season of Ramazan. In this traditional part of the country many eating places open only for the evening iftar fast-breaking meal, some close for the entire month. When Ramazan happens to coincide, as it did this year and will do so again next, with those long, hot summer days, it's a definite no-no. And in recent times, of course, given the current volatile situation on Turkey's long border with war-torn Syria, I'd feel compelled to tell them to keep abreast of the latest political situation, check the travel advice issued by their home... So it was, of course, that a few weeks ago I found myself ignoring my own advice and traveling around Southeast Turkey, from Gaziantep to Diyarbakır, in both the dog days of summer and during the holy month of Ramazan. I did at least follow my own counsel in checking with my insurance company to see if I'd be covered for my trip. I would, as long as I didn't transgress the Foreign and Commonwealth Office's "advise against all travel to within 10 kilometers of the border with Syria'' directive. Gaziantep's bazaar and former Christian neighborhoods. Gaziantep is the gateway city to the Southeast. I first visited it back in the early 1980s, when it seemed a disappointingly drab kind of place. The atmospheric bazaar quarter clustered around the foot of its imposing citadel apart, it didn't have much to detain a traveler with his eyes fixed on more exotic sights further east, such as the iconic heads atop Mt. Nemrut or the exquisite... Much has changed since then. A major beneficiary of the GAP (Southeast Anatolian Project), Gaziantep has prospered and become a vibrant destination for the.
