Each month, Boris Kachka offers nonfiction and fiction book recommendations. You should read as many of them as possible. A Manual for Cleaning Women: Selected Stories , by Lucia Berlin (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, August 18). May we never run out of great, unsung authors to unearth after they die, as Berlin did in 2004. Her 76 stories, more than half of them collected... an Oakland cleaner's life meted out in bus routes. a woman remembering, in local twang, her journey across the El Paso border for an abortion. Together, they make up the mosaic of Berlin’s thinly fictionalized, widely traveled, and traumatically eventful life, a Knausgaardian journey by other means. Street Poison: The Biography of Iceberg Slim , by Justin Gifford (Doubleday, August 4). Before there was rap, there was pulp — mainly the work of Robert Beck, a. k. a. Iceberg Slim, the criminal who went on to write the best-selling memoir Pimp... It wasn’t just his stories that inspired gangsta rappers (including part-namesakes Ice Cube and Ice-T), but the story of his life. He transcended the victimizing ghetto first by victimizing others and then by mythologizing that feat in popular art. Gifford, an academic attuned to the vernacular, assesses that wild life story with clear eyes and an understanding of its true cultural scope. Flood of Fire , by Amitav Ghosh (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, August 4). If ever a historical book series deserved an HBO mini-series, it’s the one that concludes here, with the first Opium War and Britain’s 1841 seizure of Hong Kong. The Ibis trilogy’s first novel, 2008’s Sea of Poppies , opened in the fields of India, ended with a daring ocean escape, and came with a glossary of the nautical lingua franca of Asian colonialism. The polyglot story has since stretched and loosened, but Ghosh has stayed with the theme — the clash of personal desire and implacable commerce — without losing sight of the power of a kick-ass naval-battle sequence. A Window Opens , by Elisabeth Egan (Simon & Schuster, August 25). Diving headfirst into the territory where the having-it-all quandary meets the roman à clef, Egan draws on her suburban life, her job at Glamour , and her brief stint at Amazon... NEW DELHI : Internationally renowned Bollywood's ace choreographer Sandip Soparrkar is lending his star power to promote cube sport in India. It's a promising start to a phase where Bollywood and sports - two of the most loved fields - come together for the promotion of Cube sport. Sandip Soparrkar, who has been roped in as the India brand ambassador of the Speed Cubing Mumbai Unlimited (SCUM), recently was seen doing a photoshoot with various cube. Sandip Soparrkar said, “I am having a great time, I feel honoured that SCMU asked me to represent them as their brand ambassador. Cubing is a fantastic sport which sharpens not just the mind but even develops the motor movements in a person. It is an amazing sport for kids as well as adults and I am glad that I have been chosen as the face of the brand”. The photoshoot will convey that the cube is just not a toy, it's a complete sport in itself. Cube is not just a hobby for kids, it can be helpful for working professionals too to tackle everyday challenges in life and a great stress buster. Head of Speed Cubing Mumbai Unlimited Mr. Girish Bhatia Said, “We are proud to announce our association with Bollywood's Ace choreographer Mr. Sandip Soparrkar as our brand ambassador. He got addicted to speed cubing through his cuber son Arjun who shares a similar passion and wants to take speed cubing to a greater level. Bhatia added "I was cubing since 2011, and wanted cube competitions to happen in India, but there was no one to take cubing seriously. Speed Cubing Mumbai Unlimited - SCMU is a group of speed cubers from Mumbai. The group was formed in 2011 by akshay Rao who later left the group to pursue higher studies. Since 2011, the organisation has actively promoted Rubiks Cube as a sport and not as a hobby. The group currently headed by Girish Bhatia, has about thirty active members who are collectively referred to as Team SCMU. Since 2011, the team organized and supported over 40 cube competitions, and is the only organization in India to promote speedcubing at a professional level. Their competition in January, 2015 was Asia's largest competition and world's 8th largest. Their June, 2015 Competition was held in Juhu, which turned out to be the world's largest single day event. With joining of Ankit Gupta, the Team SCMU is now aiming to promote the speed cubing all over the India. In 2013, the Team made a rubik cube mosaic of Sachin Tendulkar, which gave them entry into. Forget about swim-up bars and elegant infinity pools. Today’s coolest hotel pools flaunt jaw-dropping, quirky amenities like sharks on the other side of a glass wall or the image of Andy Warhol’s face on the floor below. Forget about those old kidney shapes, too. These days a pool may be saucer-shaped, or a glass cube. Tired of the same-old aquamarine water. Imagine swimming in water that’s blood-red, or gold. From Las Vegas to Austria, from Manhattan’s bustling Lower East Side to tranquil Tibet, here are some of the world’s weirdest hotel pools. Where else but Sin City would a hotel devise such an adrenaline-seeking theme to its poolside atmosphere. Tucked into the Golden Nugget property is The Tank, where sharks swim in a glass-enclosed structure and humans coast down a 30-foot waterslide that’s – thankfully – separated from the fish.  Infinity Pool, Marina Bay Sands, Singapore Perched on the 57th floor of one of its three towers, the SkyPark hosts a 150-meter infinity-edge pool that creates the appearance of floating off into the clouds while swimming. Rimming the other side of the pool are palm trees and chaise lounges. Bonus: Singapore’s skyline never looked so stunning.  The Red Pool, The Library, Koh Samui, Thailand What looks like blood in the aptly named Red Pool at The Library is an optical illusion, thanks to a mosaic of orange, yellow and deep-red tiles glinting under a blazing sun. Crave a good book after a swim. Look no further than the adjacent all-white library, The Lib, and sink into a red mattress or black beanbag-chair on the pool’s wooden deck.  The St. Regis Lhasa Resort, Tibet The stunning view of the Himalayas from your room isn’t the only artful aspect of this nearly 5-year-old luxury hotel. Take a dip in the gold pool, located inside the 11,700-square-foot spa’s Iridium Room. Because each tile in the pool is gold, it literally glows. The black-and-white sea serpent hovering above makes it an even more magical experience.  Laucala Island Resort, Laucala, Fiji The 80-foot-long glass cube that serves as the resort’s pool is as chic as the 3,500-acre, private-island hotel itself. Come nightfall, Tiki torches create a serene Polynesian vibe. If you want to do laps or spread out, no worries, as there is also a lagoon-style pool surrounding the cube. For more private soaks, simply retire to your villa, which features a private infinity pool.  Sixty LES (Lower. Source: www.foxnews.com
