"It's not a crazy party spot. We want hotel guests to be able to come up here and relax, without being bombarded by crowds," said Angelo Peruzzi, director of bars and nightlife for SIXTY hotels. A 38-year-old Italian expat who commutes to work on a motorbike, Peruzzi is the lanky, laid-back embodiment of this space's "Ciao bella. Mingling among a rakish group of 20-odd guests, we sipped sweet, lime-salted margaritas, listened to mellow music (the DJ stylings of Peruzzi's brother Marco), and discussed the hotel's design features. Twilight fast fell on our Empire State, Chrysler and City Hall surroundings – but we barely noticed. La Dolce Vita. The impromptu arrangement of low-slung blue and white 50's era furniture and a Luce de Luna marble bar top subtly hint at the hotel's Dolce Vita attitude. "For me, Soho is a melting pot. It's relaxed. it's chilled. And anyone - old, young, wearing ripped jeans or a Chanel suit - fits in. So we created a very chilled, eclectic environment using high and low style pieces," Martin Brudnizki, the UK based designer told CULTURE+TRAVEL during a phone interview. Together, the mix of rustic wire chairs and pristine mosaic coffee tables creates a sturdy yet stylish tableau. It’s what you’d imagine your wealthy relatives returning with from a decadent antique shopping spree in Rome – without the pretention. Rather than umbrella-clad margaritas (an obvious food & beverage program gaffe) these rooftop tables call for bitter Negronis or the ceramic clank of thick, dark espressos being whisked away by rumpled, rolled up sleeves. Calling his design theme "un-precious," Brudnizki explained that A60’s décor is an extension of the hotel's ground floor coastal-Italian restaurant, Sessanta a project he also helmed in collaboration with New York City restaurateur John McDonald. If You Stay. For healthy portions of that Fellini post-war feeling, head downstairs and cozy into the cyan leather and sienna wood booths of Sessanta’s 100-seat kitchen. Here, the food and beverage offerings are spot-on, as executive chef Jordan Frosolone recreates the recipes of his Sicilian grandmother, with dishes such as Polpette di Maiale (pork sausage with peppers and Sicilian honey), and fennel tortellini... By Pete Zamplas- Asheville Fashion Week is unveiled this week, with several runway shows and other events downtown. A dozen local rising and established fashion designers, apparel businesses and around 200 models take turns in the spotlight Aug. 5-8, starting Wednesday 5-7 p. m. with a modeling preview aptly named Celebrating our Design Community and the Fashion Arts in Asheville. “Save the Runway” is the four-day gala’s sub-title, celebrating Asheville’s growing reputation for very creative, artsy handmade clothes. Eccentric real estate mogul Donald Trump is snaring headlines for controversial statements as a presidential candidate. This makes it timely that his Trump Models of New York is among onlookers expected to scout talent at Asheville Fashion Week (AFW). Models auditioned for AFW back on May 17. Potential customers can shop for distinctive wear, and catch the runway vibe from blending motion and gestures with techno music and mood lighting. “Fashion Week is an art and fashion event with the ultimate goal of creating buzz and giving a relevant outlet to fashion houses, buyers, and culture enthusiasts,” event organizer Sarah Merrell stated. “AFW connects consumers with products and services that relate to fashion, beauty and luxury. ” She added it is “showcasing incredible Asheville talent with amazing work of designers, and highlighting the rich fashion community that has been thriving in Asheville in recent years. Gage Talent and Modeling Agency puts on Asheville Fashion Week, with Merrell as its community director. Jaime Hensley owns Gage in Knoxville, Tenn. , and is opening an office in Asheville headed by Merrell. Merrell is Gage’s local liaison and a talent scout. She started a local fashion online site, organized benefit fashion shows in a “giving philosophy,” and now trumpets Fashion Week. Stunning mosaics have turned up during an archaeological dig of a fifth-century synagogue in northern Israel. Tiny earth-hued stones in the mosaics swirl to form images of women surrounded by cupids holding discs, mythological creatures, a rooster, expressive theater masks and symbols of Dionysus (Bacchus), the Greco-Roman god of wine. And painted ivy crawls up columns covered with plaster. These recent discoveries add context and scenes to previously uncovered mosaics and inscriptions on the same and adjacent panels. "The images in these mosaics — as well as their high level of artistic quality — and the columns painted with vegetal motifs have never been found in any other synagogue," Jodi Magness, the director of the excavation project and professor of early... "They are unique discoveries. " [ See Photos of the Colorful Mosaics from Israel ]. Magness led the team that discovered the first mosaic at the excavation site , which featured the Bible's Samson, in 2012, and continued unearthing pieces each summer. The site is located in Huqoq, in the Galilee region of Israel. Magness said she expects to return to the site for another four to five years, until excavation is complete. This summer's findings are "quite extraordinary panels," Magness told Live Science. "The mosaics were the paving of [the synagogue's] floor. " The building measured about 66 feet long and 32 to 50 feet wide (20 by 10-15 meters). "The floors are in a relatively good state of preservation, but the building is buried and ruined," she said. Secular mosaics. Elephant mosaics found in an earlier excavation of different sections of the same and adjacent panels hinted at the synagogue's less religious take on décor. The armored pachyderms "indicate that the scene depicted in the elephant mosaic is not a biblical story," Magness said, because there are no stories in the Hebrew Bible that involve elephants. The elephant panel measures about 11. 5 feet (3. 5 m) from top to bottom and fits on a panel set in an aisle about just as wide. The elephants were featured on a panel discovered last summer that may have depicted a Jewish legend about a meeting between Alexander the Great and the Jewish high priest. "The Greek armies after the time of Alexander the Great and then later the Romans did use elephants from their campaign," she said,. Source: www.livescience.com
