The birds and the bees inspire children's mosaic designs - Northwich Guardian

WORKING with pupils from Lostock Gralam Primary School and the University of Chester Academy Northwich, Bellway Homes has appointed mosaic artist Natalie Guy to commission a piece for its Northwich development, Long Wood Park. The schools are near the development on Manchester Road, which is to feature an open space seating area where the mosaics will be placed for residents and locals to enjoy. Natalie hosted a workshop at both schools, at which it was decided the theme for the mosaics would be the natural environment of Lostock Gralam, focusing on flowers and wildlife. Pupils aged four to 15 produced drawings of the creatures and flowers they come across daily, including robins, butterflies, bees and ladybirds, as well as roses and tulips, which will form the design of the mosaics. The best drawings were voted for by the community, from pupils, teachers and parents to the church and local groups. Natalie is working on a large mosaic, three metres square, as well as two smaller mosaics to sit alongside. She said: “The children thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and were excited to be part of the project. The drawings were excellent, and whittling them down to a handful must have been a tough job for those who voted. “The mosaic is taking shape nicely and I can’t wait to unveil it later this year. It will be a superb addition at the development and a real talking point in Lostock Gralam. Jenny Bell, sales director at Bellway Homes, said: “It’s a pleasure to be working on such a special project Lostock Gralam Primary School and University of Chester Academy Northwich. “We wanted to create a tranquil spot at the development for residents to enjoy. "The introduction of the seating area was a good plan, and teaming up with Natalie to create a mosaic feature, which will be a colourful and fun focal point, was a superb idea. “We are looking forward to seeing the finished product in place, and believe the mosaic will leave a lasting legacy at the development, not only for the residents but the community as a whole. regulated This website and associated newspapers adhere to the Independent Press Standards Organisation's Editors' Code of Practice. NYC subway mosaics prompt debate on Confederate symbols - CBC.ca

To Jackowe, who wrote about the curious trim designs for a 2012 article in Civil War Times, they're an unmistakable homage to the late Times publisher Adolph Ochs' Southern roots. "When you see this distinct pattern, that means only one thing," he said over the rumble of trains at the station this week. "It's the likeness of a Confederate flag. Mosaics represent 'crossroads'. Social media users have posted about the curious tilework since at least 2012, commenting on a possible link to the War of the Rebellion. At a time when the rebel flag of the South has divided the country, with South Carolina senators voting this week to remove it from the statehouse's grounds , the Confederate battle flag is as politically loaded a symbol as ever. But is that what's represented at Times Square. The New York Post noticed the designs last month, proclaiming in a headline to have found the subway's "hidden Confederate flags. " The article quoted riders who said they were "disgusted" by the designs. The Times responded days later, noting that it observed nearly 200 commuters walking past the mosaics on a Friday night, all seemingly "untroubled by the decorative environment. Both articles quoted from Jackowe's research, written years before the Charleston tragedy and the current flag dispute. As for the city's Metropolitan Transportation Authority's take on the tiles. It wasn't convinced. In an official statement, the MTA said the mosaics evoke Times Square's standing as the "crossroads of the world," and nothing more. 'Culturally dishonest' Jackowe begs to differ, pointing to Ochs' well-publicized love for his Southern heritage as well as subway architect Squire J. Vickers' appreciation for using symbols to honour prominent figures. "To call these designs just geometric patterns is culturally dishonest," Jackowe said. "Did Squire Vickers coincidentally create a likeness of a Confederate flag and then coincidentally place that coincidence in the basement of a prominent New York Southerner. How likely is that. Times Square was named after The New York Times, the headquarters of which, under Ochs' stewardship, once housed the original subway in 1904. Ochs lived most of his life in Knoxville, Tenn. His father, Julius, fought for the Union. his mother, Bertha Levy, was a "Confederate sympathizer" who. Source: www.cbc.ca

Gallery: There are 26 wolves hiding in Bury St Edmunds - how long will it take ... - East Anglian Daily Times

T he Wolf Trail in Bury had been calling to me for some time, writes Liz. Ever since I first spotted the ghostly white one grazing in St Mary’s churchyard. Being a competitive sort, I downloaded my wolf map from the ourburystedmunds website , knowing I would not rest until I had found all 26 wolves on display in the town and entered the competition in which those who find every wolf have a chance to... Gregg, one of our photographers, was prevailed upon to go with me. “How many are there. ” he asked. “Not many,” I lied. The colour drained from his face when we met in town. “26 pictures of you and a wolf. ” he said, grimly. We began at the Theatre Royal, meeting a rather lonely, patchwork wolf (designed by Heidi McEvoy-Swift of Rojo Art) with a Tudor ruff around its neck and a lovely, velvety body. No one else was about as I stroked her. Slightly embarrassed, I posed for a snap and we moved on. Next, the ghost wolf in St Mary’s who is made out of milk cartons - (also by Rojo Art). We arrived to find Mike and Rosalind from Elmswell. ‘We’re waiting for the grandchildren,’ Rosalind said quickly. Clearly, no adult (except me) would do the wolf trail just for herself. Rosalind said that in Bristol they have Shaun the Sheeps and a stab of local pride shot through me. Wolves are so much better, aren’t they. Next stop, the Norman Tower where I met councillor and former mayor Patricia Warby passing by. We examined the Norman Tower wolf. He is designed by Steve Manning from Topiary Art Designs in Pakenham and made from jute. Behind him, near the St Edmund statue, was our next wolf, a proud metal creature whose tongue is much remarked upon, by Nigel Kaines. “How about we get Patricia in this picture. ” Gregg said. Not bored of me already, surely. The cathedral gave us two more wolves - and a surprise bonus. The first wolf was a video installation in the cloisters where we met Ainsley Buck from Stowmarket and his children Josie, 7, and Jake, 10. The video, called After Us, by Barbara Dougan, imagines a post apocalyptic world where humans and wolves... Josie and Jake loved it and Ainsley said, ‘this trail is fantastic. ’, a view I was beginning to share (though not sure about Gregg. Inside the Cathedral itself, a gorgeous wiry wolf by West Suffolk College student Rosie Brown could be seen at the altar and. Source: www.eadt.co.uk
