Whimsical touches add surprise to West Knox lakeside home - Knoxville News Sentinel

Pat and Tom Bright’s three-year-old lakeside home in the Lyons Bend community is a study in whimsy. “We both like things that are a little unusual,” says Pat. “Frankly, anything whimsical — we’re all about it. ”. The most striking whimsical piece is not inside the home but outdoors at the pool, an area Pat describes as “a private getaway. We love the greenery and the privacy. Three copper fountains, three water bowls, smooth blue glass, a spa with travertine surround, blue glass beads, glass tiles, loungers with navy and royal blue canvas covers, deep blue salt water, a view of the boathouse and the lake — in sum, the... Not surprising since the Brights own Prism Pool and Backyard in Bearden. But the Brights couldn’t resist throwing some unexpected items into the tranquil scene. The mosaic gecko and tortoise lingering near the pool steps add a touch of whimsy, but the over-the-top, most unusual feature is the metal sculpture by Preston Farabow the Brights purchased at Zoofari in June. They named the figure Roxie and placed her adjacent to the deep end of the pool. “She’s so ugly she’s beautiful,” says Pat, admitting that “Preston might not appreciate that. Created from metal pieces including salvage from the Henley Bridge and a wrecked NASCAR vehicle, the roller-skate-wearing Roxie serves as fair warning that what lies inside the home might be — to use the Brights’ words — unusual and whimsical. The custom-crafted iron stair railings featuring deer, bears, coyotes and evergreens make a dramatic statement in the entry. The wine rack in the dining room is truly unique. it’s number five of only 25 made by the artist. The oversized Tiffany light fixture is in perfect scale with the open dining area’s hand-carved table and chairs. The fixture was a rare find. “I could never have afforded real Tiffany,” says Pat, “but I was in Atlanta on business and spotted it in a shop for 75% off. I said, ‘If you can get it in my car, I’ll buy it. ’ They somehow managed to get it in there. But when I drove up to the hotel, the bellman refused to let me leave it in the car. We got it up to my room, where it sat for two days, before being stuffed back into the car. The handcrafted wooden furniture also has a story. “We were in Ellijay, Ga. ,” remembers Pat. “We went there to see a waterfall and bought a truckload of furniture. The dining room swathes guests in sophisticated luxury but doesn’t make diners who aren’t dressed for a fashion shoot feel as if they made an egregious error by even stepping foot in the door. Owners Vincenzo and Agostino Gabriele are far too gracious and welcoming to say it, but I have no problem saying it: have a little class. Class is something that has flown out of too many windows in too many restaurants. Not at Vincenzo’s, where elegance isn’t pretentious but is everywhere. Chef Gabriele’s menu is a seductive mosaic of slightly rustic and sublimely refined cuisine. It reminds me of a bookshelf that’s lined with embossed leather books. Beautiful at first glance, and revelatory and delicious when the books are opened, or the dishes are served. Gabriele inflects his dishes with delicate nuances and depths of flavor in expressive masterpieces of creativity and skill. The service is polished and poised. Waiters and captains are knowledgeable and delightful, so much so that all the pampering could become embarrassing if it weren’t so over-the-top wonderful. Service at Vincenzo’s epitomizes professionalism, demonstrating that it is both an art and a craft when done well. Executing anything less than well doesn’t happen at Vincenzo’s.
