Haven: Old City meets Latin folk art - Philly.com

Transitional. Distinctive tags describing Old City. But Ted Newbold, who owns a rowhouse here with wife Helen Cunningham, called the area home back when descriptions such as warehouse and fashionable weren't commingled. Newbold, 84, an urban pioneer, is a descendant of Nathan Trotter, founder of Nathan Trotter & Co. Inc. , a metal-products company established on Front Street in 1789. In the 1950s, he worked for the firm and lived in Society Hill and on Elfreth's Alley. "By coincidence, Daniel Trotter, Nathan's father, also once lived in the same Elfreth's Alley house where I lived," says Newbold, who never tires of his neighborhood's culture and history. He's retired as director of the Independence Seaport Museum and sits on the boards of the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Association for Public Art. When he and Cunningham, who married in 1984, invited friends over back then, eyebrows raised. "They'd say, 'This can't be where you live. The buildings around here are all warehouses,' "says Cunningham, 65, who loves the vibrancy of the reinvented area, now filled with fair-trade coffee shops, clay studios, and regional theaters. Their rowhouse, on a brick-and-cobblestone street, has the storied past you'd imagine. Built for merchant Henry Harrison circa 1760, it was one of three structures he used as rentals. Newbold acquired the house in 1980. They added a wing 27 years ago, more than doubling the 1,200-square-foot footprint. Inside, there's no escaping the history: period fireplaces, wooden floors, intricate cupboards, a claw-foot tub, front and rear staircases, and notable moldings and cornices. Just as sublime are the treasures, artwork and furnishings the couple have assembled, creating a unique and hospitable setting for frequent guests. In the living room is a bold portrait of a man by local mosaic artist Isaiah Zagar, facing a retrofitted counter now used as a dining table for 10. Other walls are decorated with folk art, including works by Felipe Jesus Consalvos, known for his... Cultural masks, many picked up on more than 30 trips to Guatemala, accessorize a wall leading to the upper levels. "What attracts us to Guatemala is that it's still mostly undeveloped," says Cunningham, a high school Spanish teacher before her role as president of the Samuel S. Fels Fund for the last 23 years. An avid cook, she loves. Source: www.philly.com

A visit to Little Havana as the embargo that enlivened it comes to an end - Washington Post

Santería offerings are scattered at the base of a ceiba tree near the main strip. Unsuspecting chickens peck at scraps, not knowing they might be the next sacrifice. The corner fruit market sells fresh-made guarapo, juice from crushed sugar cane. Nearby, a couple is dancing salsa on the sidewalk. And everyone speaks Spanish. This is Miami’s Little Havana. And for more than 50 years, this was the closest that most Americans could get to experiencing Cuba. But with the Obama administration’s push to restore diplomacy with the island nation, Cuba seems poised to become as accessible as Cancun. Even so, there will always be plenty of reasons to visit Little Havana. One is that it’s the Cuban exile community’s Plymouth Rock — the historical landing site of a resilient people, who fled here to rebuild their lives after Fidel Castro led rebels to victory in the 1959 revolution. Little Havana also has its own cultural identity, one that has maintained its vibrant allure even as new souvenir shops pop up and more tour buses pull in. “Little Havana and La Habana are vastly different experiences,” says Cuban-born Guillermo... “It’s like visiting Little Italy in New York versus Italy. They [both] will always have their own unique appeal. An influx of non-Cuban immigrants, mostly from Central and South America, has reduced the Cuban population to about a third of Little Havana’s residents, Grenier says. But everyone there recognizes the value of preserving the neighborhood’s identity from a historical perspective — and a financial one. Keeping Little Havana Cuban is good for business. 30 miles north of Little Havana. Think Hard Rock Cafe but with congas, not electric guitars. The joint lacked grime, and personality, but the house band, Trio Aguiares, nailed “Lágrimas Negras” (“Black Tears”), a slow-building “bolero-son,” a precursor to salsa music. Foreshadowing a strict adherence to pre-revolutionary culture that was evident throughout my trip, the trio stuck to vintage standards punctuated by the chik-chika-chik of the güiro, a traditional percussion instrument. “Every time we excavate down to the depths of our childhood, we find these musical treasures,” said singer Amarylis Rodríguez, who studied. Oh what fun – pull a Yule Log through McAdenville - Charlotte Observer (blog)

McAdenville is known as Christmas Town, drawing thousands annually to see its spectacular light display. On Friday the town celebrates another part of its Christmas tradition, the Yule Log Ceremony and Parade. Residents and visitors will follow the yule log as it’s pulled by children on a sled through town to Legacy Park. Once positioned in the open fireplace, the log is ignited, and the audience joins together in singing Christmas carols. At the end of the evening, children can visit with Santa. Mosaic Arts, in collaboration with Opera Carolina, is presenting free performances of the one-act opera “Amahl and the Night Visitors. ” On Friday catch the show at Broad Street United Methodist Church in Mooresville, and on Saturday at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Statesville. Composer Gian Carlo Menotti’s work tells the story of the shepherd boy Amahl’s encounters with the three kings and a magic star. Source: www.charlotteobserver.com
