Tile mosaic at Santa Rosa's Highway 101 underpass finally complete - Santa Rosa Press Democrat

A dragon has awakened from a long slumber. Artists just completed the second dragon on the tile mosaic that adorns the Highway 101 underpass along the Prince Memorial Greenway in Santa Rosa after it sat unfinished for two years. Mario Uribe and his team of apprentices at the art education nonprofit Artstart first painted the dragon mural at the behest of the city in 2010. After it kept getting covered with gang-related tagging, Uribe replaced the first dragon with... The eyes of the first dragon, were gouged repeatedly. With the city unable to continue to pay for repairs, Uribe said the project came to a stop. “I wasn’t going to give until it was done,” Uribe said. He continued to push for the mural until the city was able to dedicate more money for the dragons, which symbolize strength in Asia. He said their meaning was fitting given the mural’s history. “The city persevered,” he said as he admired the 1,500-square-foot mural on Friday. “The city didn’t give up on the project. Uribe wasn’t the only one elated over its completion. “It’s amazing. I didn’t think it was going to get done,” said Angelina Duckett, the lead artist on the project. “It kept getting destroyed. “It brings me a great sense of pride and accomplishment,” added Duckett, who first helped repair the mural about a year ago. Duckett, 24, of Santa Rosa, has spent the summer working on the mural four to five days a week. “It means the world to me to bring beauty to the community and transform places that don’t look so great,” added Duckett, a licensed mosaic artist who worked on other artworks in the city, including the mosaic fish statue at the entrance of the... Bicyclists and pedestrians on the trail slowed down Friday morning to admire the mural and thank her for the work as she and her mother, Jodi Duckett, mounted the final tiles on the wall. “It’s beautiful. I hope no one messes with it,” said Sally Domenighini, a Willows resident who was in town visiting for a few days, along with her husband, James. The Ducketts said they, too, are keeping their fingers crossed. “It brings a sense of pride and ownership to these areas,” Angelina Duckett said, adding that numerous homeless people have vowed to watch over the mural and protect it from. Mural is another piece in mosaic project for downtown - Press & Sun-Bulletin

Binghamton artist Emily Jablon — along with the help of local middle school and high school students — is close to completing another piece of her mosaic project in downtown Binghamton. The newest addition — an approximately 200-foot-long strip of tiled mosaic — runs parallel to the banks of the Susquehanna River and features swirling abstract patterns of blue, yellow, purple and orange, as well as shiny triangles, checkered... Jablon was initially approached by Visions Federal Credit Union, which wanted to support her glass-tile-themed public art. After deciding to decorate the wall that hugs the pathway along the Susquehanna River just off Court Street, Jablon approached the owner of the building, who gave his approval. Jablon then turned to Binghamton University’s Liberty Partnerships Program, an initiative meant to help high school and middle school kids stay on track to graduate through volunteer and community service efforts. Over the past three weeks, between 30 and 40 kids from the Susquehanna Valley and Owego school districts have spent time helping to bring the mosaic project to life. “I think it is awesome for them to be doing positive things in our community,” said Liberty Partnership Program coordinator Tracey Parker. “This is something that is going to be here forever, and they are always going to say, ‘That’s my community. That’s what we did. Under the guidance of Jablon, the students assembled the tile by gluing it to mesh strips in the studio. Once settled, the strips with tiles attached were cut into jigsaw-like pieces and brought to the scene, where mortar was applied to the wall and the tiles were set into place. Grout was then used to fill the cracks between the tiles to further secure them. With only a few feet of the mural missing grout, the project is expected to be completed sometime this week. “It was kind of new to me, so I thought it was pretty good for my first time ever doing mosaics. It was fun,” said Jason Moelder, 15, of Conklin, who helped on the project. “It’s a really good feeling to know that we made a mark on this town,” said Brooke Osterhout, 19, of Conklin, an alumni of Liberty Partnership who continues to help with the program. “I grew up here, and it’s cool to know that something I helped to do is here. Over the past five years, Jablon and her friends have been donating their time and. Source: www.pressconnects.com

York County 4-H Fair has come a long way from the farm - York Daily Record/Sunday News

Click here for more photos from this story Peggy Trimmer, of Hanover, held her granddaughter in her arms and walked toward two caged alpacas at the annual York County 4-H Fair. Claudia Buehrle, 20 months old, was encouraged by her family to pet the soft, fuzzy animals. The fair is a celebration that showcases scientific, creative, hands-on projects that youth invest their time in throughout the year. With numerous chapters to choose from, those who volunteered and attended Sunday said participation is a rewarding experience, no matter which option is pursued. "Maybe one day you'll be the princess of alpacas," Trimmer said to Claudia. Trimmer said her family drove up from Hanover to York because her grandson, Max, had a "fantastic insect collection. "We are here to honor all the 4-H kids, and the wonderful things that they do," she said. "We are thrilled to see children play with animals, and active in nature, not playing video games. According to Penn State University 4-H extension website, the theme for 2015 is "Fulfill Your 4-H Dreams in 2015. " On site at Stoverstown Road was everything from bounce houses, a professional face painter, dancing dogs, a balloon artist, to Bob... Livestock, food, and club exhibits are displayed for attendees. Volunteer Denelle Sowers, whose daughter has been 4-H president of the Logan Chapter for the past four years, said she couldn't be any more satisfied with what the nonprofit offers. Sowers spent her Sunday polishing broken pieces of ceramic tile. The tile was used as part of a target and arrow mosaic, which has been an on-going story in progress since 2009. The first design was the four-leaf clover that adorns the main hall, Sowers said. Volunteers moved onto another 4-H campus building to continue its story of what 4-H accomplishes. A new wall and a new story is underway. "This scene is highlighting shooting," Sowers said. "There are so many different chapters kids can be involved in. We're suburbanites. This is so much more than farming. Sowers explained "shooting" involves teaching youth how to safely shoot bows, rifles and pistols. The mosaic, she said, once it's done will wrap around the whole building. "The kids have done it," Sowers said. "It's very detailed. We're doing something for our community. It's really an awesome thing. I feel very blessed that my daughter found this organization. Source: www.ydr.com
